Cell phone wallet

As always, my most recent project started with a simple idea (a cell phone carrier) but it evolved into a cell phone wallet, with a card holder, zippered pocket for coins, an open pocket for bills and a velcro pocket for keys.

When editing the video I realized that it was getting too long and that some of the components were content that was worth putting in separate videos as they are techniques that can be used in other projects. So, I created a new playlist where I put these techniques, if you want to see the video, just click on the technique.

Regarding the project itself, I started with the idea of making a bag to carry my cell phone, but then I thought I would also need a way to carry my keys so I decided to make a pocket with a flap for my cell phone and a pocket on the back for the keys. But then what if I wanted to take money? I had to add another pocket, so I decided to make the bag with an opening like a book, so I would even have space to put a pocket for cards. In the end I created a wallet with room for everything I need.

As material I used a blazer and blouse whose colors complemented each other. When cutting the blazer I saw that I could cut it to reuse the pocket, so I used the blazer pocket on the back of the bag.

I ended up making two wallets because I wasn't 100% satisfied with the first one, in the first one I put a zipper in the blazer pocket and initially I didn't add a structurer, I just used the interfacing that was already glued to the blazer, that I used to make the front pocket, I thought that as the wallet had several layers I wouldn't need a structurer so as not to have too much bulk, but in the end I found it too soft so I put interfacing with glue on both sides in the zipper pocket.

In the second wallet I used interfacing and chose to make a double internal pocket, with an opening for bills and a closure for coins and I added velcro to the blazer pocket.

Since the fabric on the front pocket flap had marine designs I decided to embroider the front pocket with the same motifs. In the first wallet I made a shell and in the second a starfish. Here I also tried different techniques, the shell I sewed with two lines, the star I started with a double stitch, it is one of the decorative stitches on my machine, but  it does one stitch forward and one back and they not always line when making the curves, so I opted to change to straight stitch and in the end go back and stitch over the design again, this way the design was clearer. I still had the option of using a thicker thread, like topstitch thread, but I had no yellow thread to try.

I made the straps using two different techniques to test, the second method was faster but in terms of difficulty I thought they were similar.

I added some fabric rings to hang the strap, so I can use the wallet vertically or horizontally, and I can even take them out and use it as a hand wallet.

To close the wallet I also used two different methods, in the first one I used a button and an elastic band, I had thought about adding velcro but the edge was too narrow and it didn't fit, in the second wallet I used press buttons, and so that they wouldn't be seen from the outside I placed them inside the lining.

If you want to do something similar, you can download the sheet with measurements in word or pdf, and I would love if you let me know that you made it.

Here is the final video.
