3‑in‑1 Bag — a new version - crossbody / tote / backpack

A few years ago, I made a 3‑in‑1 bag to use when running errands. The idea was simple: carry a small crossbody bag and, if I happened to buy something, unfold the larger bag that stays hidden inside the front pocket. You can see the original version here.

With use, I realised that although the concept worked very well, the execution could have been better. The main issue was the fabric I chose: it was too soft for the bag and especially for the straps, which twisted easily.

So I decided to make a new version — sturdier and more practical. This time I used upholstery fabric for the crossbody bag, added a full lining, and included more pockets. At first, I planned to make the front exterior pocket (where the large folded bag is stored) using the brown fabric, but I realised it would become too thick — difficult to sew and inconvenient when folding and unfolding the large bag. I ended up using a cotton remnant with a print on both sides, which worked much better.

The measurements are exactly the same as the previous bag, and I’m sharing the diagram again for convenience.

Useful tips before making your own 3‑in‑1 bag

If you’re thinking about sewing a bag like this, here are a few things I learned from making both versions:

  • Crossbody bag fabric: it shouldn’t be too thin. If it is, use an interfacing to add structure.

  • Front exterior pocket: the fabric shouldn’t be too thick, since this is where the large bag stays folded. The thicker it is, the harder it will be to fold and unfold.

  • Straps: if you use a thin fabric, add interfacing to prevent twisting. Keep in mind that one of the straps stays folded inside the crossbody bag — the thicker it is, the bulkier the bag will be when folded.

  • Size of the front pocket: it should be slightly larger than the crossbody bag so it overlaps without catching the bag in the seam.

  • Buttons on the storage pocket: if you want to add buttons, test the placement first. When the bag is unfolded, the buttons become visible and will be in diferent positions.
