If you have large cardboard boxes stored at home and need more space to organize your shoes, this project is an excellent option.
Materials Used
- Thick corrugated cardboard (I used half of a refrigerator box)
- White glue
- Water
- Paper for reinforcement
- Painter's tape
- Self-adhesive paper, wallpaper or paint (optional)
- Ruler
- Craft knife or utility knife
- Weights to hold the pieces while drying
Preparation
I started by diluting white glue with a little water to make it easier to apply.
To ensure the structure is strong, it is important to pay attention to the direction of the cardboard corrugation. The pieces that will be positioned vertically should also have the corrugation running vertically, increasing their ability to support weight without bending.
The thicker the cardboard, the better. Since I needed many pieces and was running short of cardboard by the end, I cut several strips 8 cm high and joined them together using paper strips and diluted white glue.
After gluing them together, I placed weights on top to prevent warping while drying. Once one side was dry, I repeated the process on the other side to achieve uniform reinforcement and then cut the pieces to the final dimensions needed.
Building the Shelves
The cardboard used was approximately 0.5 cm thick. To increase the thickness of the shelves, I glued two pieces together, resulting in shelves approximately 1 cm thick. This reinforcement helps prevent the shelves from sagging under the weight of the shoes over time.
Once again, I left the pieces drying under weights to ensure a strong and even bond.
Assembling the Structure
While making the top panels, I made a small mistake and cut two pieces narrower than intended. Since I no longer had any cardboard available, I glued the pieces together and had to assemble the structure differently from what I had originally planned.
This solution worked well and still left a 0.5 cm margin on each side to fit the side panels.
I then marked all the required measurements on the sides:
0.5 cm for the top panel slot
12 cm for each vertical divider
1 cm for each shelf
This pattern was repeated until the entire structure was completed.
Once all the markings were finished, I glued the C side pieces to the side panels and started forming the organizer.
Reinforcement and Finishing
To improve both the appearance and durability, I covered the exposed corrugated edges with strips of paper.
The shelves were covered with self-adhesive paper, but there are other alternatives:
- Decorative adhesive paper
- Wallpaper
- Paint
If you want to paint or cover the inside of the organizer as well, it is advisable to do so before the final assembly.
I chose to leave the structure mostly unfinished because I plan to add a fabric cover later that will conceal most of the exterior. The interior will hardly be visible once it is filled with shoes. I only took care to cover the front edges with kraft paper strips, since that is the part that will remain visible.
Final Assembly
After applying glue to the slots where the top panels would fit, I began joining the different parts of the structure.
To provide additional stability, I decided to permanently fix one shelf in the center.
Since I intend to hang this organizer, there is no risk of it tipping over, so I left the remaining shelves removable. This way, I can adjust the height of the compartments whenever necessary.
If you plan to place the organizer on the floor, I recommend gluing all the shelves in place to make the structure stronger, or even doubling the thickness of the sides and top panels.
While everything was drying, I used painter's tape to keep the pieces aligned and in place.
Finally, I reinforced all the interior and exterior corners with paper and glue. For even greater strength, you can apply several overlapping layers.
Final Result
The result is a functional, affordable shoe organizer made entirely from recycled materials. The modular system allows you to adjust the height of the compartments according to the type of footwear, making it extremely versatile.
In a future project, I will show how I made a fabric cover to protect the organizer and allow it to be hung conveniently.
Conclusion
Transforming cardboard boxes into storage solutions is an excellent way to save money and give new life to materials that would normally be discarded. With careful attention to corrugation direction, reinforcement, and proper gluing techniques, it is possible to create a surprisingly durable structure.
