Before |
not a good idea.
So I decided that the best thing was to keep the bed and cover the headboard, the biggest challenge was the shape of the headboard, which is also outdated, my idea was a rectangular headboard. When I was thinking about how to do it, it was also when I changed the kitchen appliances and some of the boxes had cardboard corners to protect the appliances, like these, and it was when I saw them that I had an Eureka moment, why not use the corners and the card box to make the headboard?
I started by taking the measurements of the bed and cutting the box so that it fit between the two side posts, to ensure that the top of the headboard would be the same thickness as the side I used the cardboard corners, which I secured with glue tape to the backside of the headboard. I lined the entire headboard with two layers of an acrylic blanket, so that it was padded, and lastly I covered it with the fabric I had chosen for the headboard, to attach the fabric to the headboard I used a manual stapler, and the headboard was ready.
A few years after having made the headboard I moved to a house that we renovated and the headboard was the starting point for the decoration of my new room, and taking advantage of the bed being dismantled because of the move I painted it in white.
The actual version |
As a curiosity, the fabric I used on the headboard was actually a curtain, after a lot of searching and not finding a fabric that I liked, one day I saw that curtain and I thought it would look good on the headboard.
A few years later, after starting the renovation of the new house, I went back to the same store where I had bought the curtain and I found three identical curtains for sale, I brought all three, two are hanging in the window and the other one I used to make a window seat cushion and some pillows.
For those who want to put this idea into practice, here are some suggestions:
Instead of cardboard, you can also use wood, as it is to be leaning against the headboard, it can be a thin panel in mdf or plywood, it can be nailed, stapled or glued with double-sided tape.
If you don't find a fabric you like in the fabric stores, remember that you can use other things like sheets, curtains, tablecloths, just check if the size is enough for what you need.
This can also be a way to reuse the curtains at home, they are often in good condition but after a few years you feel like seeing something else on the windows, this way you can change the curtains and the headboard without ruining the budget.
